More Information About Chamaedorea

Chamaedorea is a genus of palm trees probably best known for the indoor container plant, Chamaedorea elegans, the parlour palm. The genus Chamaedorea contains over 100 species of palm trees native primarily to the tropical Americas. Luckily for us, there are a few chamaedorea species and hybrids (e.g., C. microspadix, C. radicalis, C. oreophila etc.) that have demonstrated enough cold tolerance to be trialed as landscape plants here in the South. Chamaedorea palms have pinnate (feather-like) leaves and are dioecious, which means that if you want seeds, you'll need a male and a female plant.

Chamaedorea are fairly short for a palm and in the wild exist primarily as understory trees. In the garden, they prefer partial shade, heat, humid air and consistent moisture. As you may know, we go nuts for palms, have a nice collection of cold hardy palm trees for sale (butia, xbutyagrus, chamaerops, nannorrhops, sabal, trachycarpus, washingtonia etc.) and are happy to add chamaedorea to the list.
