More Information About Sideritis

Sideritis is a mint relative (family Lamiaceae) who like so many of its cousins, produces leaves that are great for making tea. In the Mediterranean and Balkan countries, especially Spain, Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, and Macedonia, Sideritis tea is a local favorite and is consumed as a digestive, cold and flu remedy and a general cure-all. In Greece, many people drink a cup of Mountain tea every day for their health. The ancient Greek doctor Dioscorides advised soldiers to drink Sideritis tea to help them heal their wounds more quickly. Modern scientific research has shown that Sideritis tea has some beneficial uses in the treatment of osteoporosis, preventing colds, flus, and allergies, as a calming agent and possible treatment for ADHD and as an anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory agent.

Sideritis species are subshrubs and herbs that typically feature silvery leaves. The plants typically grow on rocky soil in full sun. A well drained slope, rock garden, or raised bed would be the ideal place to grow Sideritis in your garden. In the wild, Sideritis can often be seen growing with Cistus, and these two fragrant plants would make wonderful companions in your garden too. Try pairing Sideritis with other drought-tolerant minty plants like Pycnothymus, Clinadina, Rosmarinus, and Lavandula for a nice aromatic herb garden. Its closest relative, Stachys, also would make a great garden companion.
