This US native, occurring on shallow soil rock outcrops from Texas east to Georgia and north to Illinois, is so showy that it is often sold as a summer bedding plant. The 8" tall clumps of rubbery needle-laden stems make a mat which is topped in early spring (late April in NC) with 3" wide firework-like heads of bright pink flowers. Depending on conditions, it can behave as either an annual, biennial, or perennial.
