Phanerophlebia is a small genus of ferns that are native to the New World tropics and subtropics. Phanerophlebia is a rare genus , both in the wild and in cultivation. The taxonomy of Phanerophlebia is somewhat controversial since the morphological features of phanerophlebia ferns are similar to the Asian genus cyrtomium and the genus polystichum. In the past, some taxonomists have even lumped phanerophlebia species in with one or the other...however, genetic studies have shown that phanerophlebia warrants its own genus designation.
The name phanerophlebia is funny sounding but fairly mundane. It is derived from the Latin for "visible veins", referring to the reticulated veination of the leaves. Phanerophlebia is like most ferns and prefers a part shade site with well-amended, well-drained soil. Some species are evergreen and provide visual interest year round. Phanerophlebia looks great when combined with hosta, pinellia, amorphophallus, or polygonatum.
