More Information About Echium
Some of the 60 species of Echium are weeds, some are edible and still others are used to produce dye. We prefer to use select echium species as ornamental plants in the garden. Echium is native to Europe, north Africa and the Canary islands and the tall plants produce towers of small, blue (rarely red or white) flowers, perfect for the back of the border where they attract bees and hummingbirds. Nice! Echium prefers full sun and well-drained soils for best performance but it is a tough, deer-resistant perennial that tolerates heat and drought.
