The genus name Saruma is an intentional anagram of the genus Asarum. Saruma is a monotypic (one species) genus whose lone member, Saruma henryi, was discovered in China in the early 1900s by Augustine Henry, an Irish plant explorer who spent 20 years collecting plants in China.

More Information About Saruma

Today, saruma is endangered in the wild and is nursery propagated for the ornamental plant industry.

Saruma (Upright Wild Ginger) Growing Conditions

Like its cousin asarum, Saruma henryi prefers part shade and moist but well-drained soil in the woodland garden. Saruma has an un-asarum-like, small primrose-yellow flower that is held above the foliage in spring and summer. The thick, felty, heart-shaped leaves are fragrant when touched.

Try pairing with other woodland plants such as ferns, hosta, or calanthe.
