Hydrangea is a classic plant of the flowering perennial garden. The genus Hydrangea contains about 75 species of shrubs, trees and woody vines, along with hundreds of named cultivars. Hydrangeas are grown primarily for their large flower clusters that vary in shape from flat lacecaps, to long panicles, and large, round mopheads. Our goal is to offer some of the lesser known, unique hydrangea species and selections.

Hydrangeas grow best in morning sun or partial shade with rich, consistently moist, well-drained soil. The large leaves of Hydrangea lose water quickly and the plants wilt rapidly when grown in too much sun or in dry conditions. Soil pH is also important, since most Hydrangea macrophylla cultivars produce flowers that turn blue in acidic soil (<5.5) and pink in basic soil (>6.5). When you are ready to buy unique hydrangea selections for your garden, we hope you'll check out our ever expanding list of hydrangeas for sale below.
Since 1988, Plant Delights Nursery has been the choice of serious gardeners and plant collectors looking for the best and rarest perennial plants. We are pleased to have received the Perennial Plant Association Retail Award in 2011, the American Horticulture Society Commercial Award in 2002, and to have been selected as one of the Best Mail Order Plant Sources - Garden Design Magazine 2010. Welcome to our family of plant lovers!
(aka: Hydrangea 'NCHA1') We are thrilled to offer this breeding breakthrough from NCSU professor, Tom Ranney. Tom has taken the US native (New York south to Florida) Hydrangea arborescens and created a sterile (mophead) form with rich pink flowers...in other words a pink-flowered Hydrangea 'Annabelle' with slightly smaller 6" wide flower heads (10" if cut to the ground in spring). The name Hydrangea 'Spirit' is a tribute to those dealing with and surviving breast cancer, (despite officially being rejected by the really bright EU breeders rights officials who prefer nonsensical names). A royalty from every plant sold goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Although Hydrangea 'Spirit' is quite drought-tolerant, a well-drained moist soil is best. Pot Size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
This amazingly vigorous bright yellow-foliaged seedling (not a sport) of Hydrangea 'Big Daddy' was selected by Georgia's Ozzie Johnson. Our original clump, now 3' tall x 5' wide is adorned, starting in late May (NC), with huge mophead flowers which open white and turn either blue or a Milk of Magnesia pink (in high pH soils)...a pink even tackier than the outfits at a Monster Truck show! Those of you in Zone 5, where the flower buds get killed in the winter, can still enjoy the colorful foliage....one heckuva way to brighten up a dark corner...I love it! Keep the soil slightly moist during the growing season. Pot Size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
Hydrangea 'Yofloma' is a plant that we first saw in Holland, and one that doesn't appear to be distributed widely either in the US or in the EU. Hydrangea 'Yofloma' makes a 3' tall x 4' wide clump, adorned during the growing season with golden yellow foliage and topped in summer with large mopheads of pure white flowers. If you grow Hydrangea 'Yofloma' in alkaline soils, the flowers will also be white...duh! The brightness of the foliage fades during flowering on all of the gold leaf hydrangeas. Brighter sun results in better foliage color, but morning sun is best and keep the soil moist. So, folks...what the heck is a Yofloma? Pot Size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
Everyone who visits our gardens has begged us to propagate this showy white-edged form of the lacecap Hydrangea macrophylla. We originally received this as Hydrangea macrophylla 'Mariesii Variegata', but the correct names seems to be 'Maculata'. The summer-produced flower heads are composed of a row of the sterile florets around the large central flower cluster. The lacecap flowers are blue in acid soil, and pink in alkaline areas. When winter temperatures drop below 10 degrees F, the bloom buds may be killed...that's okay, though, since the foliage is so wonderful! Expect a 5' wide x 3' tall clump at maturity. Pot Size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Veitchii' is the perfect hydrangea to make a large statement in the garden...a really large statement in a really large garden. Hydrangea 'Veitchii' makes an insanely vigorous 5' tall x 10' wide giant clump, adorned with rich dark green leaves and covered in mid-May and June (NC), with massive lacecap flower heads composed of blue central fertile flowers surrounded by large white bracts. I can think of few plants that we've grown which have this much garden impact. Pot Size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
