Cypripedium is a genus of woodland garden plants that are among the most desired of all hardy orchids, despite their often finicky requirements. It usually takes an average of 7 years to grow these hardy orchids from seed in vitro, therefore the price of responsibly grown cypripedium plants will never compete with that of (ecologically damaging) wild-collected cypripedium orchids. Cypripedium orchids are vastly overharvested from the wild resulting in plummeting populations. If you buy cypripedium, please choose a nursery like Plant Delights that only grows cypripedium orchids propagated from nursery stock.

When planted, cypripedium roots should lay horizontally, just below a well-drained, well-prepared mulched surface. The roots should be covered with compost and mulch. Since cypripedium roots are shallow, be very careful that they don't dry out before the plants are well established. The most common reason for cypripedium failure is poor soil preparation and incorrect planting techniques.
We are excited to be able to offer for sale some of the very rare and wonderful Frosch cypripedium hybrids from Germany. While we have chosen the easiest to grow of the cypripedium species and the most vigorous cypripedium hybrids, lady slipper orchids are not plants for beginning gardeners. We are pleased to offer an increasing selection of nursery-propagated species and hybrid cypripedium for sale. This 1992 Werner Frosch hybrid is a cross of the Chinese Cypripedium macranthos x the American C. parviflorum v. parviflorum. This robust grower makes a patch of 15" tall stems, each topped in mid-May with a creamy yellow pouch with burgundy streaks, backed by three large sepals of dark burgundy with a flush of yellow. These are flowering-sized plants. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
I'll never forget the first time I saw this orchid at the US National Arboretum. I had never seen anything quite this beautiful. The spectacular, heavily-pleated green leaves resemble a Japanese hand fan opened horizontally atop a 6" tall stem. Held just above the foliage is a scrumptious pink ladyslipper-like flower. As you can imagine, the supply of these nursery-propagated plants is very limited. These are not easy to grow and should only be tried by very serious gardeners and plant collectors. Plant in humus rich soil, and expect two years to re-establish enough to flower. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Cypripedium 'Ulla Silkens' is a stunning 1996 hybrid from Svante Malmgren. This vigorous hybrid strain is a cross of the American Cypripedium reginae x the rare Chinese Cypripedium flavum. Cypripedium 'Ulla Silkens' is much easier to grow than its parents and will take a good bit of sun in cooler climates, but still prefers moist alkaline soils. The 2' tall flowering stalks that appear in mid- to late-June are topped with huge slippers of burgundy and white, backed by three large, pure white sepals. The clumps will become quite large with nearly 100 flowers per clump. Our offerings are flowering-sized plants grown from seed. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This 1991 Werner Frosch hybrid is the result of a romantic interlude between Cypripedium parviflorum v. parviflorum and Cypripedium macranthos var. speciosum. The result is a vigorous hybrid which, in mid-spring, produces 14" tall stalks of flowers with white pockets, occasionally stained with burgundy near the top, then complemented by twisted sepals of dark burgundy. Our offerings are all flowering-sized plants. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This 1996 Werner Frosch introduction is a hybrid of the Chinese Cypripedium macranthos and the large-growing American Cypripedium kentuckiense. Cypripedium 'Philipp' makes a robust hybrid to nearly 2' tall, topped in late spring with large slippers of white with maroon spots near the top and backed by stunning, large, deep purple sepals often streaked white...a truly amazing plant! These are all flowering-sized plants. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Cypripedium 'Sabine Pastel' is a rare white-flowered form of Cypripedium 'Sabine', which comes from a cross of the Chinese Cypripedium fasciolatum and the Chinese Cypripedium macranthos. Atop the 18" stalk in early spring sits an obscenely large, Grade A egg-sized pure white flower. We have grown this cross since 2006, and have been thrilled at its heat tolerance. Our seed-grown plants are all flowering size. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This 2005 Peter Corkhill hardy ladyslipper orchid hybrid combines the US native Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens with the Asian Cypripedium fasciolatum. The resulting vigorous hybrid produces stalks topped with a creamy white pouch backed by light brown sepals. This is a similar cross of Cypripedium 'Inge' except using the larger flowered form of Cypripedium parviflorum. Our ladyslipper orchid offerings are all flowering-sized plants. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
We are very excited to offer this exciting and vigorous 2005 Heinz Pinkepank hybrid of Cypripedium pubescens x Cypripedium kentuckiense. In appearance, Cypripedium 'Lothar Pinkepank' resembles Cypripedium kentuckiense except the pouch is creamy yellow, slightly smaller, and the tepals are darker cinnamon and more spiraled. How could you not like anything named Pinkepank? Our offerings are all flowering-sized plants...quantities are very limited. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This 1991 Carson Whitlow hybrid is the result of a pre-arranged rendezvous between the US native Cypripedium parviflorum var. parviflorum and the Chinese Cypripedium henryi. This easy-to-grow selection produces 18" tall stalks, topped in mid-spring with a rich, deep yellow pouch, backed by long, twisted cinnamon sepals for a stunning contrast. Our offerings of Cypripedium 'Hank Small' are all flowering-sized plants. I couldn't figure how an orchid was named for a one-year Atlanta Braves baseball player, when Carson shared that the hybrid is actually named for its parents. Hank is a common name for one parent Cypripedium henryi, and Cypripedium parviflorum means "small"...very cute. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This 2009 Werner Frosch hybrid of Cypripedium parviflorum v. parviflorum and C. franchetii makes a nice clump, topped in mid-spring with 13" tall stalks of creamy-white pockets surrounded by twisted burgundy-cinnamon sepals. Our offerings are all flowering-sized plants. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Cypripedium 'Ursel' is a compact growing hybrid of the high elevation Chinese Cypripedium fasciolatum and the giant-flowered Chinese Cypripedium henryi. The result is a 15" tall plant with large yellow flowers, often with red flecking in the sepals and usually borne 2-3 per stem. These are all flowering-sized-plants. Please remember that Cypripedium are only for advanced gardeners. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
