This native member of the poppy family can be found in woodlands from North Dakota south to Florida. The easy-to-grow bloodroot is certainly one of the stars of early spring woodland gardens. Each clump can produce dozens of 6" flower stalks that are topped with 1" white daisies in early April (NC). The flowers are followed by rounded green leaves with lobes on one side, resembling the smile of the protagonist characters from the movie Deliverance. Bloodroots are best sited in a slightly moist woodland setting and should be divided every three years to prevent clump decline...our offerings are flowering-size plants, grown from seed here at PDN. What can we say about the splendid double-flowered bloodroot that hasn't already been said? One sight of the perfectly formed balls of pure white held atop the magically unfolding leaves in early spring, and you simply can't resist. Sarracenia (Pitcher Plant)
Whether it's their unique foliage, fabulous flowers, or ability to rid the world of unwanted insect pests, these are indeed a wonderful group of plants. All of the pitcher plants we offer are nursery-propagated, either from seed or tissue culture. Pitcher plants prefer moist soils but do not require a bog to grow well in the garden. They can also be grown in a container that rests in a tray of water. Pitcher plants are not woodland plants and grow best in full bright sun. Pitcher plants also do not fare well indoors and should remain outdoors (where hardy)...except when used as conversation pieces for wild parties. DO NOT feed pitcher plants with bits of meat, mundane table scraps, or chemical fertilizers. Their consumption of insects is an afterthought, not a requirement. In the wild, they grow in sandy/peat-based soils with a pH between 3 and 4.

The pale pitcher plant is found in moist bogs from Alabama west to Texas. This Southeast native forms 2' tall yellow pitchers starting in early spring, similar to S. flava, but with a slightly more rounded hood (rounded hoods have been banned in some states, so check your local regulations). The plants are adorned with bizarrely beautiful, creamy-yellow flowers on 18" pencil-sized stalks in early spring. Moist soil, but not sloppy wet conditions, work best. From Kim Magnuson of Hawaii comes this mid-'90s S. leucophylla hybrid (S. leucophylla x S. x willisii) created by Mark Edwards of New Zealand, who named the plant after his daughter. S. 'Daina's Delight' (not Dana or Diana) brings even more coloration to the wonderful, white-top pitcher plant. Daina must have really liked rednecks, 'cause the formerly white head and neck on each 2' tall pitcher is sunburn-blister red. As with most rednecks, this one's sure to stand out in your garden. Sarracenia 'Doodlebug' (Little Bugs TM Pitcher Plant)

This vigorous grower is a cross of S. alabamensis x S. psittacina. The short, green, upright pitchers are topped with dramatic, tattoo-like, red veining around the white "window" in the neck of the cobra-shaped top. "Too cute" is the only way to describe Sarracenia 'Ladybug'. This S. psittacina x S. purpurea x S. minor hybrid makes a great, small 1' wide clump composed of dozens of fat, little 8-10" tall, apple-red pitchers, each highlighted with nice white spotting on the back of each "neck." Sarracenia leucophylla 'Tarnock' (Double Flowered White Top Pitcher Plant)

This amazing and very vigorous selection of the white top pitcher plant was discovered by Coleman Tarnock in Baldwin County, Alabama, and later propagated by the Atlanta Botanical Garden. While the red-veined, white-topped pitchers look normal (as much as any pitcher plant looks normal), it is the alien-like flowers that boast an extraordinary double set of sepals. In flower, S. 'Tarnock' is truly something worth inviting the garden club over to see. Royalties from each plant sold go to the endangered plant conservation program at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. This East Coast native is the really fascinating member of the pitcher plant family. The leaves, shaped like parrot heads (not to be confused with Deadheads), are green with red veins and lie flat on the ground in a perfect circle. While the parrot pitcher is one of the smaller pitcher plants to 12" diameter, this is the one that draws everyone's attention...even before they see the flowers that resemble red umbrellas, held above the foliage in early spring. This is the most cold-tolerant, easiest-to-grow, and one of the most spectacular of the pitcher plants. The red-veined green pitchers usually turn a lovely blood red in fall. As with S. psittacina, the pitchers lie flat on the ground forming a 1' wide clump with the opening facing upwards. Sarracenia 'Redbug' is amazing both for its vigor and the ridiculously large number of pitchers that it produces. This rarely offered, naturally-occurring hybrid pitcher plant is found in the coastal plains region from Virginia to South Carolina. S. x catesbaei (S. purpurea x S. flava) has features that are intermediate between the parents. The 15" tall brick-red pitchers are held upright...until they fill with water. This is one of the most garden-worthy introductions to come out of China in years. This rare Aristolochia family member (cousin to asarum...notice saruma is a recombination of the same letters) makes a 2' tall x 3' wide clump of upright stalks clothed with 5" wide, fuzzy, light-green, heart-shaped leaves. From early spring through late summer, the clump is topped with 3/4" buttery yellow flowers...a splendid addition to a well-drained site in the woodland garden and a great way to fool the neighborhood gardening know-it-all! (syn: Typhonium venosum) This amazing form of Sauromatum venosum is one we obtained from India back in the '80s. Superficially, it is similar to the typical species, except the tropical-looking leaves are about twice as large (up to 40" across), and the stalk is a dusty light-green with fewer, but much larger, black freckles. This stem pattern is much more dramatic than the typical form and, so far, it has proven equally as hardy. Where you have enough room, the tropical effect of this form is absolutely stunning. Saxifraga (Strawberry Begonia)
There are a number of different groups of saxifrages from difficult-to-grow alpine species to easy-to-grow woodland gems. We've successfully killed all of the alpine types, so guess what is left. These Asian natives vary greatly in leaf pattern, but are all similar in habit... low-growing with a nice spreading habit, making a great woodland groundcover, especially in moist soils. |

From high in the mountains of Japan's Kinki Peninsula comes this Bleddyn and Sue Wynn-Jones collection BSWJ4972. In appearance, S. 'Kinki Purple' is similar to S. 'Maroon Beauty' with 3" rounded, purple-backed leaves overlain with wine-red in spring. Each leaf is so covered in long red hair that insects have to shave the leaves before eating. Each clump sends out 1' long bright red threads that drop to the ground like fireworks, sprouting new plants where they land. In 5 years, expect a 3' wide patch, topped in May and June with a marvelous show of 1' spikes composed of small, airy, white flowers. You've gotta love those darn taxonomists...Scilla scilloides translates into the scilla that looks like a scilla...no s---t. Hailing from China, Korea, and Japan, this winter-dormant scilla emerges in spring looking like a 4" tall, glossy-leaf clump of grass. In July and August, the 15" tall flower spikes arise, giving it the appearance of an airy, pinky mauve liatris. S. scilloides does seed around a bit when happy, so there's always some to share. This charming little rock garden perennial makes a short cushion to 5" in height, composed of short upright stems and rounded .5" wide hairy leaves. This US native, found in open rocky woods, rocky barrens and bluffs from Minnesota south to Florida, makes a 2' wide patch of 2' tall hairy stems, topped from May through September with heart-shaped green leaves and ending with 6" terminal inflorescences of blue-purple flowers which resemble miniature snapdragons. This delightful Mexican skullcap makes a wonderfully durable, attractive, and easy-to-grow gem for the rock garden. Our 14-year-old plant is 8" tall x 18" wide. In spring, this dwarf mound is smothered in tiny fruit-punch-colored, snapdragon-like flowers that continue sporadically through the summer...dynamite!
