We first saw Tricyrtis 'Fluffy Orchid' at the JC Raulston Arboretum, where it blew us away. This amazing selection is most likely a tetraploid, judging by the massive, 7" long x 3" wide, thickened foliage. Most likely, this is a hybrid between Tricyrtis hirta and Tricyrtis formosana. The 3' tall, upright stalks, as well as the upper leaf axils, are topped, starting for us in mid-October, with clusters of heavily purple spotted flowers. We haven't been able to track down the history of this amazing cultivar, but assume it was bred for the cut flower trade. If you happen to know its origins, please let us know.
