This recently named palm was found growing on the high limestone cliffs (~6,000' elevation) of Doi Chiang Dao mountain in Northern Thailand. It was originally thought to be a livistona, but was later published in 1997 as Trachycarpus oreophilus by palm experts Gibbons and Spanner. Eventually T. oreophilus makes a 30' tall specimen with a crown of densely upright deeply dissected stiff green leaves. We have not yet tried this outdoors, so this should only be tried by avid gardeners who are in zone denial and like to experiment.
