Rudbeckia mohrii 'Panhandler' is a 2025 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of our Florida Panhandle collection of the little-known Southeast US native, Rudbeckia mohrii. This odd coneflower can only be found naturally from nine counties along the Florida/Georgia border, where it thrives with pitcher plants in flooded ditches. The plant is named for German born pharmacist turned Alabama botanist, Charles Theodore Mohr. If you like compact, dense, naturally compact coneflowers, this isn't for you. Mohr's coneflower is more like the Charlie Brown's Christmas tree of coneflowers, with 2' tall, airy, see-through narrow foliage, bursting into flower for us in late July. We have been delighted to find it thrives in average to slightly moist garden soil, as well as in standing shallow water.
