Clinopodium sp. nov. 2 'Cleburne' is a 2012 collection of PDN staffer Zac Hill from Cleburne County, Alabama, that differs dramatically from the typical species. We think this deserves at the least, subspecies status. Clinopodium 'Cleburne' is a non-running shrub mint that forms a 20" tall x 5' mass of woody stems adorned with tiny leaves held tightly against the stem. Starting in mid-September, the stems are enhanced by small, axillary (up to 6 per leaf axil), purple flowers, each with a speckled white throat...very drought tolerant, yet thrives in typical sunny garden conditions. Clinopodium 'Cleburne' is a great specimen for a splash of fall color in the rock garden. We originally offered this as Clinopodium georgianum before realizing this is something undescribed.
