Capsicum frutescens 'Hawaiian' is a fascinating introduction of a perennial hot pepper that was shared by Hawaiian visitor Michael Pierron in 2017. Although these peppers were introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in the early 1800s, Hawaiians consider them part of their native flora. Although we've had relatively mild winters since first planting ours in 2018, it has returned each year thereafter, although it can be late to re-emerge. Capsicum 'Hawaiian' forms a very attractive 5' tall, upright shrubby plant, loaded with hundreds of small, thin red peppers, which reportedly have a SHU (Scoville Heat Unit) of 200,000. Reportedly, these have a life span of 3 years, so they should be replanted prior to their expiration date. We think you'll really enjoy this edimental as part of your perennial garden.
