Aspidistra lutea 'Mai Chau' is a 2024 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of a 2012 collection of the late Alan Galloway, who found it growing near the town of Mai Chau (west of Hanoi), in Vietnam's Hoa Binh province. Like Aspidistra zongbayi, it is a dwarf growing species with wide leaves that spread outward instead of upright. The cluster of small yellow flowers emerge from the leaf bases, starting for us in mid-October. We think this is probably the first commercial offering of this rare species, although it doesn't quite fit the key. It's always possible this represents a closely allied, but still undescribed new species.
