Adiantum tricholepis is one of the least-known and most difficult to grow of our native maidenhair ferns. Adiantum tricholepis naturally occurs in only two central Texas counties, Bandera and Medina, where it can be found near rivers and streams growing in moist cracks among limestone boulders. In the garden, Adiantum tricholepis prefers an average to moist soil and a pH of at least 6.0 is ideal. In appearance, Adiantum tricholepis is a daintier version of the popular Adiantum capillus-veneris with smaller and very hairy fronds, creating a much finer texture in the garden. The 18" long, arching fronds compose a 1' tall x 2' wide patch...a real thing of beauty when well grown.
