Plant Delights Nursery, Inc. at Juniper Level Botanic Garden has open positions for seasonal employees to work in our Shipping Department in a high energy, fast paced, team environment. We are a family-owned company with a mission to support research, education, and the exploration of plants through the sales of unique perennial plants.
We are Plant Delights Nursery/Juniper Level Botanic Garden, a perennial plant nursery established in Raleigh in 1986, offering unique, rare, well grown, and properly named perennials to passionate gardeners around the world. We have one of the most extensive perennial trialing programs in the country. Our concern goes far beyond selling plants! Despite being best known as a nursery, we actually exist for our work as a private 28-acre botanical garden and plant research facility focusing on ex-situ plant conservation, plant exploration, breeding, and propagation. We are a family-owned company with a mission to support research, education, and the exploration of plants through the sales of unique perennial plants.
Our nursery and garden provide an opportunity to work indoors and outdoors year-round, so we have a casual dress code, a diverse staff, and a friendly working environment.
Seasonal positions are short-term positions that last anywhere from few weeks to nine months.
Job Description
Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Shipping, pulling, and packing plant orders
- Care and upkeep of containerized perennial plants
- Retail sales and customer service
- Must be open to assist other departments should the need arise.
- Occasional weekend work required may include assisting with; Tours, Open Houses or Education Center classes.

Qualifications:
- Enjoy physical and often dirty work in all types of weather
- Enjoy working with an energetic, flexible, and outgoing team
- Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, bend, kneel and often carry heavy items
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time
- Work various hours of 25 - 40 hours per week based on the business needs
- Flexibility to work some weekends, as needed, is a plus
- Plant knowledge is helpful, but not required
- Ability to pay acute attention to detail
- Punctual and have a great work ethic

HR/Bookkeeper
Seeking a Bookkeeper/Human Resource Specialist for an immediate full-time management team position. Must have experience with QuickBooks, Microsoft Office, Paylocity, Employee Navigator, E-Verify and other related programs to maintain accurate company's financials and carry out accounting duties.
Must have a solid background in Human Resource management and associated protocols including benefit management and management of various employee types--permanent and seasonal, OT exempt and non-exempt, wage and salary earners.
Position works very closely with owner to provide timely financial reporting.

Accounting:
• Payables and receivables management
• Reconciling and balancing financial statements
• Banking
• Financial reporting
• Multi-state sales tax filing and management
• Manage general liability insurance requirements including audits

Payroll Management:
• Payroll processing and reporting
• Auditing timesheets
• Auditing biweekly, quarterly and annual payroll filings
• Simple IRA program management
Human Resources:
• Recruiting, screening and verifying
• On boarding
• Maintain good employee relations
• Maintain confidential employee files
• Employee benefits management, including open enrollments

Research and Outdoor Production Assistant
Plant Delights Nursery Inc./Juniper Level Botanic Garden is seeking a full time Research and Outdoor Production Assistant starting immediately.
Reporting to the Research and Grounds Coordinator, the Research and Outdoor Production Assistant works with a small team of seasonal staff and volunteers to cultivate the outdoor plantings of the Research Program in direct support of Plant Delights Nursery/Juniper Level Botanic Garden. This is a year-round outdoor position. Candidates must be physically durable in year-round outdoor weather, detail oriented, able to follow instructions, demonstrate strong work ethic, and be able to work well with and in supervision of others. Preference will be given to applicants with a horticulture-related degree or comparable horticultural experience.
Job Description
Maintain collections integrity
- Keep beds clear of seeding and perennial weeds
- Keep plant taxa contained in their dedicated space
- Reign in running plants
- Remove fertile seed to prevent unwanted seedlings
- Collaborate with seed collection staff to collect seed for propagation and exchanges
Maintain plant health, vigor, and aesthetics
- Keep beds mulched
- Monitor soil moisture and irrigate as needed
- Scout for, and report pests and diseases to outdoor IPM
- Conduct periodic soil tests and organically amend soil as needed
- Utilize frost protection as needed
- Utilize shade structures as needed
Maintain and update plant records, inventory, and signage
- Replace broken/faded signage as needed
- Record changes in location, harvest information, or active status
- Update or replace signage to reflect changes in plant names as directed by taxonomist
- Conduct periodic plant location and availability inventories
- Assist with plant breeding and evaluation
- Record flower, seed, and breeding data
- Apply or collect pollen as directed
Plant, grow, and harvest nursery and research material
- Maintain full outdoor production blocks through division, consolidation, additions, and back pieces
- Scout daily for new things to plant
- Collaborating with the propagation department, and following integrated pest management protocol, harvest and deliver outdoor production crops as directed
- Utilize paid and volunteer labor safely and efficiently
- Report to Research and Grounds Supervisor
- Other duties as assigned

Plant Nursey Assistant - Core Grower
Job Description
This is a mid-level nursery/greenhouse team member position with primary plant health and maintenance responsibilities including irrigation, pruning, fertilizing, plant spacing, greenhouse cleaning, data collection, some re-potting, and seasonal (spring/fall) greenhouse covering/uncovering. The daily duties change seasonally with the weather, with monitoring and applying irrigation being primary (90%+) during the peak growing season. Collaboration and coordination with other team members is also required.
This position requires an independent worker, with a strong work ethic, for a Friday through Tuesday work week.
Working Environment and Physical Efforts
The primary working condition for this position is an outside plant nursery environment with exposure to outdoor elements, soil, and fertilizers, The environment is fast paced, and the employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds as needed and stand for eight or more hours a day.

Position: Full-Time, Hourly (Agriculturally exempt from overtime)
Compensation: Starting at $16.00/hr., based on experience

Standard Business Hours: Friday- Tuesday, 7:30-4:30, with occasional extra hours needed during the summer heat for irrigation tasks.

Qualifications
· A 2-year horticulture-related degree or nursery work experience is preferred.
· An intuitive ability to quickly determine plant needs, particularly related to hydration.
· A passion for growing container plants, and a strong desire to learn.
· Ability to work independently, stay organized, and follow detailed instructions.
· A detailed team player with good communication and problem-solving skills.
· You must be comfortable working outdoors in varied weather conditions and lifting up to 50 pounds as needed.
