One of the more unusual stars in our rock garden is a fascinating dwarf, hardy bromeliad, that we've grown outdoors since 2010. Dyckia choristaminea 'Frazzle Dazzle' is a Yucca Do introduction that has so far survived 8 degrees F with virtually no damage. This dwarf, hails from the mountainous state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, and in the garden, forms a 6" tall x 15" wide clump of small rosettes, composed of stiff, narrow, purple-tinted leaves, each lined with small non-aggressive baby spines. When the clumps of Dyckia choristaminea 'Frazzle Dazzle' mature, they are topped with 15" tall spikes of small, screaming, bright yellow flowers in late spring. Good drainage in winter is necessary, but it also makes an easy-to-grow container plant.
