The Best Perennial Ornamental Grasses

By Published February 14, 2013 Updated June 14, 2022

Perennial Ornamental Grasses. If you want to have interest in the garden throughout the year, a perennial ornamental grass is one way to go. Ornamental grass plants can act as a contrast with heavier textured plants like shrubs, and this juxtaposition will make the plants enhance each other. While most ornamental grass plants thrive in full sun, there are some varieties of shade ornamental grasses.

If you're interested in shade perennial ornamental grasses, Carex, or sedge, is a grass-like perennial. This "ornamental grass" is mostly evergreen, and because of its shorter stature (most sedge doesn't grow over 2' tall), carex is an appropriate choice for lining pathways or filling open areas. Other kinds of "shade ornamental grasses" include Acorus -- a perennial that does well in woodland or bog settings, and similarly Ophiopogons (mondo grasses), which are perennial ornamental grass plants that can grow in deep shade or near the edges of sunny gardens.
