Zingiber mioga is a great foliage plant for moist shady sites with some fantastic variegated cultivars. In Japan the flower buds of and new shoots of Zingiber mioga are finely shredded and used as a garnish or are roasted. Zingiber is an easy-to-grow, light shade to part sun perennial that thrives in most soil as long as it is not waterlogged in winter. Combine Zingiber with other shade plants such as hosta, farfugium, and pulmonaria for an attractive foliar show. Although we can't find anything silver about Zingiber 'Silver Arrow', it's been a great garden plant in our trials. From part sun to light shade, Zingiber mioga 'Silver Arrow' produces a patch of 3' tall stalks, each lined with 1' long x 3" wide leaves, emerging parchment gold and becoming flecked green with a delicious butterscotch frosting. This is a vigorous grower, producing a 5' wide tropical-looking patch in 5 years in good rich soil. The yellow orchid-like flowers magically appear at ground level starting in late summer. Plantsman Aaron Floden tells us that this species came through fine at -15 degrees F in Kansas. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Zingiber mioga 'White Feather' is the reverse variegated form of Zingiber 'Dancing Crane'. The 3' tall spikes emerge in late spring, adorned with 1' long x 2.5" wide green leaves, edged in creamy yellow that fades to creamy white. Expect a 5' wide patch in five years when grown in rich organic soils. Once the plants are established, they produce light yellow, orchid-like flowers at ground level in late summer and into fall. If you get hungry in the garden, they can be prepared as the perfect snack. Zingiber mioga is a great textural plant for light shade gardens and continues to surprise with its amazing winter hardiness. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
(syn: Zingiber mioga 'Nakafu') This selection of the edible (flowers and new shoots) Japanese woodland ginger comes from the collection of famed Japanese nursery Gotemba. The 3' stalks of 1' long x 2.5" wide green leaves are each highlighted with a stunning central "white lightning" pattern. Each easy-to-grow clump multiplies rapidly, soon making a 5' wide patch in five years. In late summer through fall, the small, light yellow, orchid-like flowers peek out from the base of the plant at ground level. Personally, I hope you can find something less attractive to eat! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
