You know the tropical houseplant, but how about a schefflera that is hardy outdoors...at least from Zone 7b south? We have grown this little known Chinese Schefflera delavayi for over a decade (2003) and have had it survive 8 degrees F with no protection. Like a rhododendron, which curls its leaves in winter to protect from cold temperature desiccation, Schefflera delavayi employs the same technique. On the East Coast, expect a 10-year-old specimen to reach 6' tall, although they grow much faster in the Pacific Northwest. The glossy, dark green, compound leaves form an umbrella-like canopy at the top of the trunk, which is adorned in October with 3' long, lax sprays of tiny white flowers, which attract an array of pollinators.
