This amazing South African irid is dazzling where it can be grown in the Southeast and Southwest. Since Moraea polystachya is summer-dormant, too much rain in the summer months can spell doom in poorly-drained soils. Moraea polystachya emerges and begins to flower in early September (NC) and continues through heavy frosts on 2' tall branched flower scapes that resemble blackberry lilies. Each 1" light lavender-blue flower is wonderfully patterned. In well-drained sites, Moraea polystachya is a splendid addition to the fall garden.
