(Firecracker Vine)The genus Manettia contains about 80 species, all of which are herbaceous or woody vines native to tropical parts of the Americas. Only a few Manettia species are cultivated...most as annuals or greenhouse plants (M. bicolor, M. luteorubra etc.). However, one species, Manettia cordifolia, is cold hardy and makes a nice dieback vine for the Southeast.
Manettia vines are not tall, only 10' or so, and do not appear until temperatures have warmed. Manettia cordifolia does not have the candy-corn look that is so popular on the house plant Manettia, but its tubular red flowers are quite striking and attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Manettia prefers full to part sun and a well-drained, consistently moist soil. If you want a red and yellow candy-corn color theme, try combining Manettia cordifolia with Dicentra 'Athens Yellow'.
