Do you sell wholesale or have discounts for landscapers or other nurseries?
In short no, but we do make rare exceptions. We do not offer bulk or professional discounts on our stock plants. On occasion and solely at our discretion, we may produce a small quantity of liners for specific projects or clients. You are welcome to contact our customer service team to request additional information at sales@plantdelights.com
Do you sell seeds? Annuals? Woody plants?
Our plant nursery specializes in propagating perennials, of which some are considered woody. We do not sell annuals, vegetables, fruit trees, or seeds.
Why are your plants so expensive?
Plant Delights Nursery exists to support Juniper Level Botanic Garden - a 10-acre educational, research, and display garden. JLBG campus contains more than 27,000 plants, many of which are unique, rare, endangered or extinct in their native habitat. Our mission is to collect, study, preserve, propagate, and share these plants with gardeners around the world. Every plant you purchase supports our ex-situ conservation efforts and helps preserve botanic diversity in the face of climate change.
Why is your shipping so expensive?
Before we got into this business, we thought companies were making a lot of money on shipping. After careful analysis of the time and labor required to take an order for plants, pull the plants from the growing area, assess the weather, review the state agricultural requirements, prep the plants for travel, wrap them, pack them, generate the shipping paperwork, and acquire shipping boxes, there is no profit from shipping, it is break-even situation at best.
Do you ship internationally?
If you are interested in placing an international order, please contact us. After several decades in business we found that some countries are almost impossible to ship to and you'll want to know if yours is one of them before placing an order. All international orders require the following:
- $200 Minimum plant order
- $115 for Phytosanitary inspection & certificate
- $5 per plant handling fee
- Carrier fee is based on weight and is determined and charged to you on the day of shipping
For more information, visit Ordering Plants from Plant Delights.
Can I make changes to my order?
We are happy to make changes to your existing plant order as long as the plants have not been pulled for shipment. Our orders are pulled on Fridays and Mondays for shipment the following Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Once the plants have been pulled for shipping, it is impossible for us to locate your order and exchange your plants, or to keep it from being wrapped and packaged.
You must call or email us with changes to your shipping date or additions to your order by 4:00 p.m. on the Wednesday before your scheduled shipping week. A phone call is best to ensure order changes are processed prior to pulling.
Once orders have been pulled, in order to prevent errors and keep our sanity, we are unable to reschedule orders for a later date.
How wide will "insert plant" get?
We do not list the width in our plant culture section on purpose. When you see a width of a plant listed online it is most likely for a plant that is 2-5 years old. Plants don't stop growing after that and their size may well double over the next 2-5 years, but most nurseries don't grow plants for that long to find out.
Genetics is another factor. Some plants are spreaders and others are clumpers. Some spreaders may have an infinite width rating, they keep growing as long as the conditions are good (Asarum arifolium var. callifolium 'Rock and Roll', Trachelospermum asiaticum 'Snow Rose'). Other spreaders create a wide patch over time, but don't crawl away from the original planting location (creeping phlox). For spreading plants we usually list the rate of spread in the description. Clumping perennials produce a dense patch of stems (Ginger lily, clumping bamboo) that may get several feet wide over time. And then there is everything in between.
Growing conditions affect the rate of spread as well. In general, average to moist, slightly acidic (pH 5.8 -6.5), well-drained soil rich in organic matter (50% by volume) produces large plants quickly. Plants that love sun will grow quicker in full sun, but may need extra moisture. Plants that like moist soil will have stunted growth in dry soils. Dryland plants may grumble in generally ideal soil conditions and grow happily in a sun baked gravel heap.
You are welcome to post a question about the specific plant you are interested in and we will do our best to provide additional information.
Do you grow your own plants?
We propagate the majority of our plants on site. Some plants we send to trusted growers for propagation. For example, our xMangave collection is a product of long standing collaboration with Walter's Gardens out of Michigan. Patented plants are purchased wholesale from trusted growers around the world and finished in our greenhouses.
How many bulbs are in a pot?
This is such a common question that we made a video about it.
The short answer is there is at least one flowering size bulb in a pot. Depending on the type of plant and how long it has been in a pot there may be 1-50 bulbs in one pot.
Your picture shows a large Agave but I got a tiny one, why?
We always post images of the mature plants to give gardeners a good idea of the spacing. We are also currently adding images of the stock plants to showcase the size of the plants that will ship.
How do I overwinter my hardy tropical plants (elephant ears, bananas, palms, cannas, ginger lilies, etc.)?
Great question! Please check out our article How Do I Overwinter My Hardy Tropical Plants?
I just got my plants. Should I plant them now or wait till spring/fall?
Great question! Please check out our article When Should I Plant My Plants?
Why is my plant not blooming as well as yours?
The reasons could be numerous, but the most common answer is insufficient sun exposure. For more information about taking care of your plants, please visit our Plant Care Guide or contact our customer service team at plant.info@plantdelights.com
I don't know my hardiness zone, how do I figure it out?
Please visit our Plant Hardiness Information page.
Why do your hardiness zones differ from other websites?
There are a couple of reasons our zoning is often different. From a nursery’s point of view, every time you add a hardiness zone northward, your potential sales for a plant can double. Since nurseries have an interest in selling as many plants as possible, a few of the less scrupulous ones simply lie to increase sales.
Other erroneous winter hardiness zones simply come from ignorance. We’ve seen plants like Musa basjoo listed on-line as Zone 4-9, when in reality it is only hardy just below 0F (Zone 6b/7a). Just because a particular plant survives a couple of winters in an extremely cold climate, doesn’t make it winter hardy there. It’s quite common for a Zone 5 climate to experience a couple of mild Zone 7 winters, where the temperature doesn’t drop below 0 degrees F.
Plants also behave differently in different climates. Plants native to hot summer climates are more winter hardy in similar climates and less winter hardy in cool summer climates, where they never produce enough sugars (plant antifreeze). Conversely, plants from cool summer climates are less winter hardy in hot summer regions. Our hardiness zones are from our trials in the hot summer climate of Raleigh, NC.
I bought a plant from you years ago and lost the label. Can you tell me what it is?
In most cases, yes. If you call or email our customer service department, we can look up your order history. If that fails, you can send us a digital photo of the plant in question. A third option is to look through our perennial encyclopedia, which lists every plant that we've ever offered.
I like your garden labels, where did you buy them?
Our garden labels are made in-house. You can learn about the entire process and supplies used in Tony's blog Labeling with a Laser Focus.
My garden labels have faded. What kind of permanent markers do you use?
We use Deco-Color Paint Pens, Extra Fine. You can find them online or in a craft store. Unlike Sharpie pens, which are waterproof but not UV light proof, the Deco-Color pens do not fade in outdoor weather. Our labels are high quality Pylon labels, which last quite well in the garden.
The plant I am interested in is out of stock. Are you going to offer it again?
The honest answer is - it depends. Some plants are staples and are offered every year, some are offered whenever we have stock, and some seed selections are only offered once. The best way to find out future availability is to contact our customer service team via phone or email, or post a question on that plant's page.
What's the name of the cat that followed us around?
Well, we have several, and you can see their photo gallery here.
