Hellebores are easy to grow if you provide improved soil and a part-shade garden location. Although hellebores need to be kept slightly moist when they are getting established, they become relatively drought-tolerant with age. Helleborus x hybrids will seed around the patch, but many of the other interspecific hybrids are sterile. In addition to their flowers and great foliage, hellebores are also deer-resistant.
If you are ready to buy Helleborus plants for your shade garden, check out our list of hellebores for sale below. The only thing better than shopping our website for hellebores is visiting us during our annual Winter Open House, when we hand pick the best flowering specimens from our collection and fill two entire sales houses with them. Plant Delights has one of the best collections of hellebores for sale in the country.
Since 1988, Plant Delights Nursery has been the choice of serious gardeners and plant collectors looking for the best and rarest perennial plants. We are pleased to have received the Perennial Plant Association Retail Award in 2011, the American Horticulture Society Commercial Award in 2002, and to have been selected as one of the Best Mail Order Plant Sources - Garden Design Magazine 2010. Welcome to our family of plant lovers!
This stunning introduction from RD Plants of Devon, England, is a pewter-silver leaf selection of Helleborus argutifolius and, thanks to tissue culture, there is no seedling variation. To brighten a woodland garden, I can't imagine a better choice! The 20" tall x 2' wide deer-resistant clumps of Helleborus 'Silver Lace' (larger on the West Coast) are topped in late winter with stalks of green flowers, but with foliage like this, who cares? Even in colder zones where the plant is hardy but the leaves fry in winter, this would still be great for summer color. Good drainage and protection from winter sun in cold climates will keep the foliage attractive. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This Heuger hybrid has been a standout in our trials. The 18" wide clump of dark green leaves is topped in mid-February with bright cinnamon-red stalks, ending in a good floral show of pure white outward-facing flowers which quickly age to pink. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Helleborus 'HGC Pink Frost' is the latest in the Helleborus niger hybrids to hit the market from the Heuger hellebore breeding program. Helleborus 'HGC Pink Frost' is particularly vigorous and floriferous, beginning in mid-February when the outward-facing flowers open pink and age to a lovely dark pinkish-red. Helleborus 'HGC Pink Frost' has been a favorite of all who've seen it! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This Heuger hybrid of Helleborus niger and Helleborus x sternii forms a 15" tall x 2' wide clump of dark green foliage topped, starting in February, with stalks of flower buds that begin rosy pink and open creamy white with a nice pink back. I see that the bizarre dual naming trend is alive and well in Germany. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Our first plants of Helleborus foetidus were a wonderful form from the late Rachel Dunham of Cary, NC. Over the years, we segregated out this narrow leaf race we found to have a particularly nice texture. The first season, the plants grow rapidly, forming a substantial thick 20" tall, green stalk adorned with dark green, narrowly-cut evergreen foliage. In spring, the deer-resistant clumps are topped with a giant candelabra of green bells that would have made Liberace proud. Helleborus foetidus is a short-lived perennial so allow it to seed in place, which it does quite well. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
From our friends Dick and Judith Tyler, we obtained this unique seedling that originated in the Georgia garden of Piccadilly Farm's Sam and Carleen Jones. The deer-resistant foliage of Helleborus foetidus 'Piccadilly' is a very dark grey-green with a slaty overlay, similar to Helleborus 'Wester Flisk'. The clumps are topped with stalks of whitish-green flowers, beginning in early winter and continuing through early spring. Many of the seedlings will feature nice reddish markings on the flower stem and in the leaf axils...simply superb! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This seed strain of Helleborus foetidus is the hottest Helleborus foetidus introduction in years. Helleborus 'Red Silver' popped up in the garden of Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne, probably as a cross of Helleborus 'Sopron' and Helleborus 'Wester Flisk'. For us, Helleborus 'Red Silver' holds its pewter leaf color well through the summer, although it will always be brightest in spring. In addition to the attractive deer-resistant foliage, the 30" tall flower spikes are highlighted by red petioles and the typical green flowers are usually accented by a red ring around the rim. Keep in mind this is a seed strain and there is some variability in the offspring. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
From hellebore breeders Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne comes this amazing seed strain of large double-flowering plants whose color range includes primarily reds and purples, often highlighted by a lighter white center...exceptionally beautiful. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
We are thrilled with this hand-crossed seed strain from Oregon's Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne, which yields large double yellow flowers, often tinged with a pink picotee edge and back. As with all seed strains, each plant is different as shown in our image. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This amazing seed strain of lenten rose comes from the breeding program of Oregon's Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne. Helleborus 'Onyx Odyssey' produces stalks of double black-purple flowers in late winter. This is considered the best double black strain on the market. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
These are selected violet-flowered, deer-resistant seedlings from the gardens at Plant Delights. All plants have been hand-selected for color after flowering. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This improved form of Helleborus niger comes from the German breeding program of Joseph Heuger. Helleborus 'HGC Josef Lemper' is a tissue-cultured clone selected for its upright habit and longer flowering period which, in NC, begins in October...yes, October, and continues until February. The large white flowers are typical for Helleborus niger. We think you will find this new cultivar quite amazing. Well-drained soils are very important for success with Helleborus niger. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This new hellebore hybrid (Helleborus x nigercors x Helleborus x ericsmithii) comes from breeder David Tristram of England. The dark burgundy-red petioles support glossy green leaves highlighted by silvery veins. In mid-spring, the deer-resistant clumps are topped with spikes of white flowers which first emerge as dark reddish-pink buds. Thanks to tissue culture, each plant is identical. We made up the x nigersmithii part for this new cross, but we're stuck with the moronic cultivar name. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This amazing Terra Nova clonal introduction boasts pewter-colored leaves, highlighted by silver leaf markings and a red central vein that runs up the leaf base. Even if it never flowered, this selection of the stalked species would be simply dazzling. In late winter, the 1' tall deer-resistant clumps are topped with 6" stalks of light green flowers atop the foliage. You'll go nuts when you see this! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
(aka: Helleborus 'Walhero') Helleborus 'Walberton's Rosemary' is only the second hybrid of Helleborus niger and Helleborus x hybridus. This prolific-flowering selection from the UK's David Tristram was discovered in 2000, but only released in 2009, although stock remains very limited. In our trials, Helleborus 'Walberton's Rosemary' starts flowering in early February (NC) with rosy pink flowers that age darker pink. The foliage and flowers are intermediate between both parents and, like Helleborus niger, face outward and are less damaged by severe freezes than Helleborus x hybridus. Also, Helleborus 'Walberton's Rosemary' is sterile, so unlike our former Senator Edwards, there won't be any surprise offspring to deal with. We find that Helleborus 'Walberton's Rosemary' prefers a bit more sun than typical Helleborus x hybridus, so no deep shade. Pot Size: 3 qt. (2.83 L)
Our first plants of Helleborus foetidus were a wonderful form from the late Rachel Dunham of Cary, NC. The first season, the plants grow rapidly, forming a substantial thick 20" tall, green stalk adorned with dark green, serrated-edge evergreen foliage. In the spring, the clumps are topped with a giant candelabra of green bells that would have made Liberace proud. Helleborus foetidus is a short-lived perennial, so allow it to seed in place, which it does quite well. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Helleborus x hybridus 'Painted Doubles' is yet another incredible hybrid seed strain developed by Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne. The double white flowers are highlighted by heavy red/burgundy spotting toward the center of each flower...a true breeding breakthrough for the winter garden. Because these are unflowered seedlings, each plant will vary slightly. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This seed strain of Helleborus foetidus was shared with us by Chapel Hill NC plantsman Tom Krenitsky. Visitors to the garden have marveled at the exceptionally dark green, very serrate leaves, so we finally got around to propagating a few. As with all Helleborus foetidus, the plants grow vigorously the first season forming a 20" tall stalk, clothed in dark green, hand-shaped leaves. After the second winter, the clumps are topped with 2' tall thick flower spikes with light green bells. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Helleborus x ballardiae 'HGC Spring Party' is a Helleborus niger x Helleborus lividus hybrid from the Heuger breeding program boasts dark green foliage with heavily silver-mottled foliage that nearly resembles Helleborus lividus. Starting in March, clumps of Helleborus 'HGC Spring Party' are topped with 3" wide, creamy white outfacing flowers that age to green. For us, this is an improved flowering form of Helleborus 'Winter Moonbeam'. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Helleborus lividus is probably the most strikingly beautiful and sought-after of the hellebore species. The toothed deer-resistant foliage, borne on an upright stalk, is similar to a dwarf Helleborus argutifolius, but is much hardier in our trials. Each Helleborus lividus leaf is a fabulous rich green, highlighted with silver and red veining...the specific epithet, lividus, means lead-like, not angry. Our 1' tall x 2' wide clumps flower in late winter and early spring with terminal clusters, holding masses of pink-backed greenish flowers...hardy here for 15+ years, although flower buds were killed when winter temperatures dropped below 5 degrees F. Reports of limited hardiness are only valid in cool summer climates where summer heat doesn't produce enough sugars. Our original clumps were grown from hellebore guru Will McLewin's seed.
