Since we began growing eucomis (pineapple lilies) in the early 1980s, we have found them to be easy, reliable, and fun garden perennials. We continue to evaluate most of the 10 Eucomis species from South Africa along with new hybrids from breeders around the world for their uniqueness and garden worthiness. The first plant we introduced was a selection we named Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy'. We hope you enjoy our ever-increasing eucomis offerings, many of which were bred for the cut flower market.

Eucomis prefer a sunny site and are tolerant of a wide range of soil moisture conditions except for waterlogged soils. Eucomis' pineapple-looking flowers are striking and produced in the summer when they can be enjoyed in the garden or indoors as a long lasting cut flower. Eucomis flower clusters look like a much larger version of their botanical cousin, the hyacinth. When you are ready to buy eucomis for your garden, check out our extensive list of eucomis for sale below.
Since 1988, Plant Delights Nursery has been the choice of serious gardeners and plant collectors looking for the best and rarest perennial plants. We are pleased to have received the Perennial Plant Association Retail Award in 2011, the American Horticulture Society Commercial Award in 2002, and to have been selected as one of the Best Mail Order Plant Sources - Garden Design Magazine 2010. Welcome to our family of plant lovers!
This new Eucomis comosa hybrid was bred by the Dutch company, A. Langedijk. The rosettes of 2' long, strap-shaped, green leaves are topped, starting in early July, with 3' tall spikes of creamy white flowers highlighted by pink centers...worthy of its name. Although Eucomis 'Kilimanjaro' is often listed as a selection of Eucomis comosa, its height indicates a more probable hybrid of Eucomis comosa and Eucomis pallidiflora (pole-evansii). Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This threatened (not by me) pineapple lily hails from the northern end of South Africa's Drakensberg Mountains (Mpumalanga, Free State, and Swaziland) where it can be found growing in grasslands on rocky hillsides. Eucomis montana forms an attractive rosette of thick, upright, heavily-spotted dorsal (on the bottom) leaves which are often edged in purple. The flower spikes, which reach 15" tall, are stunning with pure white flowers highlighted with a brown/black central ovary. This has become one of my favorite eucomis species. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
We selected this dramatic, purple-foliaged pineapple lily as a seedling in 1983, and it has now become one of the most talked-about plants in our garden. This dramatic accent plant produces strap-like foliage of dark burgundy forming a rosette to 24" wide. In late summer, the clump produces a 20" tall bloom stalk resembling a miniature purple pineapple...very cool! Eucomis 'Sparkling Burgundy' is very easy to grow and tolerates a wide range of garden abuses. In cooler climates, it makes a great color-bowl combo plant! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
This Eddie Welsh hybrid of the South African pineapple lily forms a rosette of fleshy green leaves, topped in August with 18" tall flower spikes that are chartreuse in bud and then open to pure white...simply stunning. Although Eucomis 'Tugela Jade' was bred for the cut flower trade, it makes a superb garden specimen. Eucomis 'Tugela Jade' is named after the Tugela River that runs through South Africa's Drakensberg Mountains where Eucomis comosa is native. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
The rare Eucomis vandermerwei is native only to the small, high rainfall region in the Northern Drakensberg Mountains (Steenkampsberg range) just east of Pretoria, South Africa. In the wild, they are found in well-drained rocky crevices, free from winter moisture. In the garden, the dwarf Eucomis vandermerwei makes a wonderful 1' wide rock garden plant. Eucomis 'Octopus' is a vigorous selection with narrow, ground-hugging green leaves, heavily specked with dark purple. The dark purple, mini pineapple-looking flowers top the foliage starting in July...just darling. If kept dry when dormant, these should prove to be quite winter-hardy. Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
Eucomis 'Twinkle Stars' is the latest in the parade of new pineapple lilies, this one from breeder Terry Hatch of Joy Nurseries in New Zealand. Eucomis 'Twinkle Stars' forms 16" tall rosettes of fleshy green foliage topped, starting in mid-July (NC), with 2' tall purple spikes with equally dark purple buds that open to light purple flowers...quite striking! Pot Size: 3.5" (24 fl. oz/709.77 ml)
