Choisya are small shrubs in the Rutaceae family (includes citrus) that hail from Southwest deserts. Choisya 'Aztec Pearl' is a cross of the US native Choisya arizonica and the Mexican Choisya ternata, made by England's Peter Moore of Longstock Park Nursery. In the garden, choisya are often used in the perennial border since they blend well with other perennials. Choisya 'Aztec Pearl' makes a 3' tall (to 6' in the Pacific Northwest) x 2' wide open shrub with dark, evergreen, finger-like foliage. In mid-spring, the plants are topped with terminal clusters of pale pink buds that open to fragrant, white, citrus-like flowers...superb! Due to their dryland origins, choisyas prefer dry, well-drained soils. In cold climates, Choisya 'Aztec Pearl' makes a superb container specimen.
