More Information About Chamaerops
Chamaerops (fan palm) is a monotypic genus of cold hardy palms native to the western Mediterranean region from Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia in Africa to Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain and France in Europe. It is a slow growing palm (to 7' in 10 years) that produces beautiful fan-shaped fronds. Chamaerops plants are typically multi-trunked, with the outside trunks growing at an outward angle to form an attractive clump. Of all the hardy palms for sale, this is the northern-most naturally occurring palm species in the world. A few specimens grow wild in southern France at 43 degrees N latitude. Chamaerops is closely related to trachycarpus although they are dramatically different in appearance.
How to Grow and Care for Fan Palms
Although they are adapted to the Mediterranean climate of cool, moist winters and hot, dry summers, fan palms grow on well-drained, steep slopes and consequently do not tolerate poor drainage and soggy soils, especially during cool weather. However, it is salt tolerant. They prefer full sun but also do well in part sun. Like most cold hardy palms, once established, chamaerops is very drought-tolerant. Some gardeners may want to trim up the leaves in order to show off the great looking trunks while others may prefer to let it grow into its natural shrubby habit. Its slow growth habit makes it a great cold-hardy palm tree for container growing in more northern climates. This palm is also deer-resistant.
