Verbena (Vervain)
Here is a plant group that has come a long way! These butterfly magnets give new meaning to the words summer color (many bloom all summer). These full sun-lovers tolerate drought well but revel with irrigation. The more moisture, the faster they spread and the better they flower. Not only are they great in the ground, but they also make stunning container plants or tender perennials in northerly zones. While true V. canadensis only flowers prolifically in spring and fall, the hybrids make a stunning show all summer. For best hardiness, don’t plant after mid-September from Zone 8 north. Also, established clumps should be cut back to basal (on the ground) foliage in early-to-mid-September. This will allow good rooting in the ground, which will better survive winter weather. |

Verbena bonariensis (Verbena on a Stick)

This is the ultimate perennial for both experienced perennial border designers as well as beginning gardeners. The blue-purple (RHS 82A), large marble-sized, branched flower clusters are borne all summer on 30" tall stalks above the narrow see-through foliage. V. bonariensis (Latin for Buenos Aires) is great in the garden or in flower arrangements. In good soils, you will find a few seedlings scattered around the garden making their own combinations! This wonderful verbena was discovered by the Georgia Gang (Dirr and Armitage) at...where else...an old homestead. The flowers on this dazzling new verbena from Texan Greg Grant are probably the most brilliant we have seen. The large flower heads of fluorescent red-violet (RHS 74A) darken toward the center of each floret, giving a three-dimensional appearance to the flowers. I picked up this hot little number on a recent trip to TX (don't tell my wife). V. 'Mabel's Maroon' is one of the most unique colors we have seen in a verbena...sort of a fluorescent maroon (RHS 71A). You can easily imagine this TX verbena's tolerance to intense heat and sun. Expect heavy flowering from midspring into early fall. "Mabel" does not have the vigor of V. 'Homestead Purple' and therefore may be easier to use in combination with other plants. We are pleased to introduce a new hardy verbena that first appeared here as a hybrid seedling between V. 'Blue Princess' and V. tenuisecta 'Michelle'. The result is an airy, amazingly vigorous cutleaf verbena that is topped, virtually all year, with light lavender flower clusters (RHS 87C). I should qualify "vigorous," in that it is nothing like the often-voracious V. 'Homestead Purple'. If you're looking for a great garden performer, I think you will be pleased with V. 'Mystic'. Verbena peruviana (Perennial Verbena)

This verbena species is a very low grower, perfect for a sunny rock wall. In 2002, we saw this growing in the wild at the base of the Argentine tree cactus in the dry mountains of northern Argentina. V. peruviana has tiny leaves and is smothered with brilliant, true red flowers (RHS 45A) from spring through summer. More water...more flowers. Verbena 'Princess Bride' (Princess Bride Verbena)

We were shocked to find that our Verbena 'Blue Princess' engaged in an after-hours unprotected liaison, not far from the nearby Juniper Level Baptist Church. Not only does the princess's offspring have good blood, but he's also a stellar performer. Our original clump reaches 1' in height to 3-4' in width and is topped from June until frost with 2" flower heads of medium pink, lightly fragrant flowers (RHS 66D), each highlighted with a dark maroon center (RHS 74A).
