Verbena (Vervain)
Here is a plant group that has come a long way! These butterfly magnets give new meaning to the words summer color (many bloom all summer). These full sun-lovers tolerate drought well but revel with irrigation. The more moisture, the faster they spread and the better they flower. Not only are they great in the ground, but they also make stunning container plants or tender perennials in northerly zones. While true V. canadensis only flowers prolifically in spring and fall, the hybrids make a stunning show all summer. For best hardiness, don’t plant after mid-September from Zone 8 north. Also, established clumps should be cut back to basal (on the ground) foliage in early-to-mid-September. This will allow good rooting in the ground, which will better survive winter weather.
Verbena 'Blue Princess' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Blue Princess' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
This verbena hybrid from England came to us via plant explorer Greg Grant of TX. The large, blue-purple flower heads (RHS 87A) exude a terrific fragrance...sort of like those expensive QVC perfumes. This is one of the most exciting verbenas in color, fragrance, and foliage that I've ever seen...FABULOUS! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01945

Verbena bonariensis (Verbena on a Stick)

Verbena bonariensis (Verbena on a Stick)

SunZone: 7-10 30" tall Origin: S. America
This is the ultimate perennial for both experienced perennial border designers as well as beginning gardeners. The blue-purple (RHS 82A), large marble-sized, branched flower clusters are borne all summer on 30" tall stalks above the narrow see-through foliage. V. bonariensis (Latin for Buenos Aires) is great in the garden or in flower arrangements. In good soils, you will find a few seedlings scattered around the garden making their own combinations! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01144

Verbena 'Fiesta' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Fiesta' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! I'll bet you have never seen anything like this new verbena from Greg Grant. The large bright pink flowers (RHS 57A) have flecks of purple in each flower that intensify with age. This has proven to be a vigorous grower that flowers continuously from spring through fall. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01146

Verbena 'Homestead Purple' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Homestead Purple' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 6-10 8" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! This wonderful verbena was discovered by the Georgia Gang (Dirr and Armitage) at...where else...an old homestead. This vigorous grower is literally covered with medium dark purple flowers backed by clean, dark green foliage all summer...WOW! V. 'Homestead Purple' can leap small plants in a single bound, so be careful to only use it in the proper place...large expanses like service stations and interstate medians, or to cover junked cars. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01150

Verbena 'Hot Lips' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Hot Lips' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! The flowers on this dazzling new verbena from Texan Greg Grant are probably the most brilliant we have seen. The large flower heads of fluorescent red-violet (RHS 74A) darken toward the center of each floret, giving a three-dimensional appearance to the flowers. From late spring until the end of summer, the patch is topped with masses of flowers...great for designers who enjoy bold color combinations! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04217

Verbena 'Mabel's Maroon' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Mabel's Maroon' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! I picked up this hot little number on a recent trip to TX (don't tell my wife). V. 'Mabel's Maroon' is one of the most unique colors we have seen in a verbena...sort of a fluorescent maroon (RHS 71A). You can easily imagine this TX verbena's tolerance to intense heat and sun. Expect heavy flowering from midspring into early fall. "Mabel" does not have the vigor of V. 'Homestead Purple' and therefore may be easier to use in combination with other plants. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #03539

Verbena 'Mystic' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Mystic' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10, at least 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! We are pleased to introduce a new hardy verbena that first appeared here as a hybrid seedling between V. 'Blue Princess' and V. tenuisecta 'Michelle'. The result is an airy, amazingly vigorous cutleaf verbena that is topped, virtually all year, with light lavender flower clusters (RHS 87C). I should qualify "vigorous," in that it is nothing like the often-voracious V. 'Homestead Purple'. If you're looking for a great garden performer, I think you will be pleased with V. 'Mystic'. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04793

Verbena peruviana (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena peruviana (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 6-10 1" tall Origin: Argentina, Brazil
This verbena species is a very low grower, perfect for a sunny rock wall. In 2002, we saw this growing in the wild at the base of the Argentine tree cactus in the dry mountains of northern Argentina. V. peruviana has tiny leaves and is smothered with brilliant, true red flowers (RHS 45A) from spring through summer. More water...more flowers. You will need sunglasses when you look at this one too long...very bright! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #01154

Verbena 'Princess Bride' (Princess Bride Verbena)

Verbena 'Princess Bride' (Princess Bride Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10, at least 12" tall Origin: Hybrid
We were shocked to find that our Verbena 'Blue Princess' engaged in an after-hours unprotected liaison, not far from the nearby Juniper Level Baptist Church. Not only does the princess's offspring have good blood, but he's also a stellar performer. Our original clump reaches 1' in height to 3-4' in width and is topped from June until frost with 2" flower heads of medium pink, lightly fragrant flowers (RHS 66D), each highlighted with a dark maroon center (RHS 74A). There were other offspring from the rendezvous, but so far, no others have measured up to the royal family standards. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #06646

Verbena 'Snowflurry' (Perennial Verbena)

Verbena 'Snowflurry' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 5-8 12" tall Origin: USA

Verbena tenuisecta 'Decked Out' (Perennial Verbena)

SunZone: 7b-10 6" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only! This amazing verbena appeared as a seedling near our back deck; hence, the name. V. 'Decked Out' has sailed through our miserable winters in great shape and rewards us with a constant show of rich, fluorescent purple flowers all summer. The non-aggressive habit makes it perfect for fun "plant marriages." Oh sorry, I forgot that the courts ruled that those weren't legal, but they can still cohabitate in all states except SC. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05423
