Hibiscus (Mallow)
We think the mallows, particularly the genus Hibiscus, are an overlooked group with wonderful potential. We have been especially pleased with many of the unknown species and the new hybrids that we have growing in our garden. Their midsummer color and lots of nectar for butterflies means that both you and the winged wonders will enjoy hibiscus in your garden. Many will grow in very soggy soil, although they are not very picky.
Hibiscus aculeatus (Pinelands Mallow)

Hibiscus aculeatus (Pinelands Mallow)

SunZone: 7-10 48" tall Origin: USA
Web-Only! This wonderful native from NC, south and west to TX, is one of the lesser-known of our native mallows. H. aculeatus is found in upland bogs, roadside ditches, and coastal pinelands within the Southeast. Although it likes moist feet, we have had very good luck growing it in raised sandy berms with regular watering. The fuzzy 4' stems are clothed with lobed, okra-like leaves. From the leaf axils, plenty of 4-5" open, cone-shaped, light yellow flowers highlighted with a dark purple eye are produced from early summer until fall. Virtually everything about this plant is fuzzy...do not approach without a razor in hand. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05905

Hibiscus mutabilis Single Flower (Confederate Rose Mallow)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7b-10 96" tall Origin: China
Web-Only! I had long been after the elusive single-flowered form of the old southern favorite, Hibiscus mutabilis. It took a trip to LA in 1999 before I found the plant growing at an abandoned homestead above Baton Rouge. This amazing mallow emerges from the ground in spring (keeps woody stalks in the Deep South) and grows rapidly to a height of 8' tall. In October, the plants are topped with dozens of 3-4" wide, single flowers that emerge white, then "mutate" to light pink over the next few days. For great fall interest in areas where frost doesn't occur until late October, this is a great addition to the sunny garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04654

Hibiscus 'Raspberry Rose' is the plant that stops everyone in their tracks during our summer open house. H. We grow quite a few hibiscus, and none come anywhere close to producing as many flowers. Each clump can get quite large, to 7' tall x 10' across, so allow plenty of room. Remember that nine out of ten hibiscus surveyed prefer rich, moist soils...this is one of the nine. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04690

Hippeastrum (Amaryllis)
Hippeastrums have long been thought of as strictly houseplants.... buy them, flower them, look at green leaves for the next several years, and then compost them. Many of the early hybrids, however, were bred with more winter-hardy species to make superb garden specimens, as evidenced by the massive clumps seen throughout the Southeast. These plants are usually only available as pass-along plants from neighbors and friends. We thought it would be great to make these wonderful plants available on a larger scale. For best results, good drainage in the winter months is helpful.

'Ackermanii' is an extremely hardy and vigorous cultivar. The wide, glossy green leaves are topped in late April and May with 20" spikes ending in star-shaped, red flowers with a white star central pattern. H. 'Ackermanii' multiplies rapidly, so I hope you have plenty of friends with whom to share. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04925

Hippeastrum x johnsonii (Hardy Amaryllis)

Hippeastrum x johnsonii (Hardy Amaryllis)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7-10, possibly colder 20" tall Origin: Hybrid
The origin of this coveted first hybrid amaryllis from circa 1800 has been debated for years but is most often regarded as the result of a cross of H. reginae and H. vittatum. The result is an amazingly hardy amaryllis, with reports indicating hardiness of Zone 5. The broad green foliage takes on a delightful coppery hue in full sun. In early May, the fast-multiplying clumps contain as many as four stems per bulb and six flowers per stem. Each flower is a sweetly fragrant, bright red trumpet, with a dramatic white star pattern in the center. Good drainage in the winter is key to increased hardiness. Homoglad 'West Coast Hybrids' (Gladhomos)

Sun to Part SunZone: 7-9, at least 15" tall Origin: Hybrid    alternate image
Web-Only! Sort of like Smucker's jellies...with a name like that, it's gotta be good. This fun cross was first made by the late Collingwood Ingram, who crossed Gladiolus tristis with Homoglossum watsonium and coined his new cultivar xHomoglad 'General Smuts' (I'm not making this up!). Now that The Evil Taxonomy Empire has eliminated the genus Homoglossum, they officially became nothing more than gladiolus. These small rock garden plants emerge in early spring to make small, 15" tall clumps with very narrow, rush-like foliage. Topping the plants in late March and into April (in NC) are delightful, small, lightly fragrant, creamy-yellow flowers with the top three petals having dark brown central markings. Since these are seed-grown, the flower color may vary slightly. These are superb rock garden plants that simply must be grown to be appreciated. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04898
