Heuchera (Coral Bell)
No plant has undergone such a dramatic resurgence, thanks first of all to H. 'Palace Purple', H.'Montrose Ruby', and more recently, to the wonderful efforts of breeders Dan Heims, Charles Oliver, and Thierry Delabroye. Coral bells are great in woodland gardens, originally grown only for their flowers (great butterfly attractors), but now for their dramatic and truly unbelievable foliage. Heucheras will tolerate a fair amount of sun, provided they are sited in a well-drained soil that doesn't hold too much moisture. We are focusing primarily on the hybrids using H. villosa, which we find produces the most long-lived, humidity-tolerant plants.

Heuchera 'Caramel' PP 16,560 (Caramel Coral Bells)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 4-8, at least 12" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
I first saw the handiwork of French breeder Thierry Delabroye on a trip to Holland. I returned home with a plant of H. 'Caramel', and I planted it beside other coral bells that were on trial. By the end of the summer (more than 100 days over 86 degrees F), most of the coral bells were dead. However, H. 'Caramel' loved the weather. The reason is the use of the heat-loving H. villosa in the breeding line. The 1' tall x 2' wide hairy clumps emerge with butterscotch foliage which changes to peachy-orange as the season progresses. These sun-tolerant plants are topped in summer with tall spikes of small white flowers.

Heuchera 'Citronelle' PP 17,934 (Citronelle Coral Bells)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 4-8, at least 12" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
If you like the yellow-leaf coral bells but they haven't proven to be heat tolerant in your climate, your solution is here. From France's Thierry Delabroye comes Heuchera 'Citronelle', a gold leaf mutation from his wonderful H. villosa hybrid, H. 'Caramel'. Like its parent, H. 'Citronelle' makes a 1' tall x 18" wide clump of golden foliage, topped in summer with tall spikes of small white flowers. H. 'Citronelle' doesn't seem to enjoy full sun like most of its siblings...must be a blonde thing. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07703

Heuchera 'Georgia Peach' PP 19,375 (Georgia Peach Coral Bells)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 4-8, at least 14" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Heuchera 'Georgia Peach' is the newest coral bell hybrid containing the heat-loving H. villosa. We were particularly impressed at how well they looked after our 3 weeks above 100 degrees F. This vigorous Terra Nova introduction makes a 2' wide clump of large peachy-red leaves, each highlighted by darker red veining. The 14" tall clumps are topped in late summer with 30" spikes of small white flowers. Although H. villosa hybrids are much more tolerant to adverse growing conditions, we still recommend a well-drained soil. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07876

Heuchera 'Miracle' PPAF (Miracle Coral Bells)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 4-8 12" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Heuchera 'Miracle' is the latest from French plant breeder Thierry Delabroye, who revolutionized coral bells for hot climates with the addition of Heuchera villosa to the gene pool. Heuchera 'Miracle' forms a 1' tall x 2' wide clump that grows through late spring and summer with chartreuse gold leaves, but once the cool weather of fall approaches, the leaves develop a subtle red veining. As the cool weather continues, the red color in the leaf intensifies. After the plant has spent the winter outdoors, the spring effect of a red leaf with a yellow margin is simply stunning! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08248

The clumps are topped from mid-April through early July with 15" tall sturdy spikes of small rosy-red flowers. This is unquestionably the best flowering coral bell we've ever trialed. As with all coral bells, we'd recommend a well-drained garden site as well as dividing them every 2-3 years. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08503

Heuchera 'Southern Comfort' PPAF (Southern Comfort Coral Bells)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 4-8, at least 14" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Heuchera 'Southern Comfort' is the Terra Nova equivalent to Heuchera 'Caramel'. The vigorous growing 14" tall x 2' wide evergreen clumps produce an abundance of amber-colored leaves that emerge peachy-orange. As the night temperatures cool, the entire plant takes on a coral-orange hue. This is one of those dramatic coral bells all of our visitors notice. The H. villosa parentage gives amazing vigor, as well as good sun and soil moisture tolerance. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08137

Heuchera 'Tiramisu' PPAF (Tiramisu Coral Bells)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 4-8, at least 12" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Heuchera 'Tiramisu' is another great H. villosa hybrid from Thierry Delabroye's breeding program. The clumps of amber/chartreuse foliage begin showing red veins as the night temperatures begin to cool in fall. When the 1' tall x 18" wide evergreen clumps begin to expand in early spring, the leaf veins become so bright with red, the leaves appear to be red with a golden border.

xHeucherella (Foamy Bell)
These human-created hybrids between two of our great native plants (heuchera and tiarella) are equally as stunning as the parents, but with more diversity of flower and leaf shape. For years, only a couple of these bigeneric hybrids were available, but thanks to recent breeding efforts the palette has greatly expanded. Many of the newer hybrids we offer are dramatic improvements in both flower and foliage...superb specimens for the woodland garden.

xHeucherella 'Alabama Sunrise' PPAF (Alabama Sunrise Foamy Bells)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 4-8 12" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
xHeucherella 'Alabama Sunrise' is the first foamy bells (heuchera x tiarella) with Heuchera villosa parentage, giving it a huge boost in humid summer climates. The 1' tall x 20" wide clumps are composed of maple-shaped leaves highlighted by dramatic red central veins. As the plant awakens from the winter, it bursts forward with brilliant golden foliage, also highlighted with dramatic red veining. As the weather warms, the new leaves emerge chartreuse and fade to green, surrounded by a band of silver, and highlighted by red veins. The clumps are topped with 2' tall stalks of small white flowers in early June (NC).

Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 4-8a 6" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
You won't have folks running past this stoplight without coming to a complete halt. xHeucherella 'Stoplight' is similar to xHeucherella 'Sunspot' but is slightly more vigorous and has a larger patch of red in the center of the bright yellow leaf. The 1' wide evergreen clumps, which are brightest in the spring, are topped in late spring with bottlebrush-like spikes of white flowers. Good drainage and a bit of morning sun are best. xHeucherella 'Tapestry' PPAF (Tapestry Foamy Bells)
Part Sun to Light Shade Zone: 4-8 12" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
We have been very pleased with this new foamy bells from the Terra Nova breeding program. The deeply-lobed tricolor leaves are olive green toward the edge, silver in the center, and dark purple along the veins which radiates out into the silver portion. As the weather cools in fall and early spring, the purple veins intensify and expand to cover more of the leaf surface. The leaves compose the 7" tall x 16" wide clump, topped with 12" stalks of tiny light pink flowers in early June (NC).
