Gaillardia (Blanket Flower)
This genus of US dryland prairie natives is well-valued for its intense summer color. If you've got a hot, well-drained site, you'll enjoy some of the special selections that we have to offer including the Federally Endangered pink flowered G. aestivalis var. winkleri. |
Gaillardia aestivalis var. winkleri (Winkler's Gaillardia)
Sun Zone: 7-9, possibly colder 24" tall Origin: USA
Web-Only!
This unique gaillardia is another Federally Endangered US native found only in open sunny areas of the East TX pineywoods in Hardin County. It makes a wonderful and easy-to-grow garden plant, forming 2' tall x 3'+ wide clumps which are topped from summer through fall with unique, light pink, pinwheel-type flowers. Endangered plant laws make the propagation and sale of rare plants difficult, so we can't ship this one. Drop by one of our open houses and pick one up. Thanks to the late JC Raulston for sharing cuttings. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05859

Gaillardia aestivalis var. winkleri 'Grape Sensation' (Grape Sensation Blanket Flower)

Instead of the typical gaillardia flowers, G. 'Grape Sensation' is topped with 2" wide grape flowers from May through October. Having derived from G. aestivalis var. winkleri, G. 'Grape Sensation' is superbly perennial, forming an airy 18" tall x 3' wide clump...good drainage always helps. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07637

Gaillardia aristata 'Fanfare' PP 15,892 (Fanfare Blanketflower)
Sun Zone: 3-9 15" tall Origin: USA
New crop available 5-29-2008 Discovered by Richard Reed in the UK, this hot gaillardia is ready to take the perennial world by storm. I don't usually get excited by gaillardias, but I'll never forget the first time I laid eyes on this beauty...my wife slapped me (just kidding). The compact, 15" tall x 12" wide, well-branched mound is topped from June to August with the most incredible flowers. Each upturned 3" wide flower head looks as if miniature honeysuckle flowers are attached to a central cone. Each floret is red at the base, changing to bright yellow at the flared tips. You've got to see this to believe it. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05566

Gaura
Gaura sprung onto the gardening scene in the early 1980's from its previous role as an obscure US native roadside perennial. Since then, breeders from around the world have realized its garden potential and have bred for and selected new garden worthy varieties. For full sun and dry conditions, its flower power is virtually unmatched. We are pleased to offer what we think are some of the best selections. |

Sun Zone: 6-10, possibly colder 30" tall Origin: USA Hybrid    alternate image
Web-Only!
Sometimes, it's just hard to hold down your excitement, and this is surely the case with Gaura 'Pink Cloud'. We have trialed this Loleta Powell hybrid, and it has truly blown away the competition. Borrowing its upright habit from G. 'Dauphin' and color from G. 'Siskiyou Pink', G. 'Pink Cloud' provides a stunning, 30" tall, upright plant that is truly smothered with brilliant pink flowers! While other gauras have slowed here by October, G. 'Pink Cloud' is still a mass of color. If you have found the others a little on the "limp" side, you will love Gaura 'Pink Cloud'! Sun Zone: 6-9, at least 36" tall Origin: USA Hybrid
Web-Only!
Gaura 'Walsnofou' is the latest gaura from the work of UK breeder David Tristam. Despite the really bad cultivar name, G. 'Walsnofou' has been a standout in our trials. G. 'Walsnofou' forms a woody base, making it more reliably perennial that any gaura that we have trialed. 2-year-old specimens form a compact but large clump to 3' tall x 5' wide (including flower spikes). The clumps are topped from May through September with spikes of white, butterfly-shaped flowers. Good drainage is important for all gauras to be reliably perennial. Geranium (Hardy Geranium or Cranesbill)
Not to be confused with pelargonium (florist geranium), these are long recognized as some of the most durable garden perennials. Not as flashy as many perennials, geraniums are experiencing a resurgence in popularity as an unbeatable uniting element in gardens. The attractive foliage, combined with the easily blendable flowers, makes geraniums a permanent staple in the perennial garden. We offer some of the best new and heat-tolerant selections from this wonderful group. |
Geranium 'Anne Thomson' (Hardy Cranesbill)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 4-8a 15" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
Garden designers who enjoy working with wild color combinations will love this new geranium. Geranium 'Anne Thomson' is our newest favorite of the gold-leaf hardy geraniums. In our trials, the heat tolerance has put the old standard, G. 'Ann Folkard', to shame. The dazzling, bright yellow-foliaged, 3' wide clump is topped with violet flowers from spring until midsummer. Geranium 'Anne Thomson' remained vigorous after 70+ days over 90 degrees F in 2002. Our summer from hell made compost of many other supposedly heat-tolerant geraniums. We think you will love this one! Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05057

Each of the 4" wide, textured green leaves is highlighted by a large purple-black circle in the center...a truly fascinating feature. In May-June, the clumps are topped with numerous 2' spikes of strongly-reflexed, dark lavender flowers. Geranium 'Pink Penny' PP 17,656 (Pink Penny Cranesbill)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 5-8 15" tall Origin: Hybrid    alternate image
If you think Geranium 'Rozanne' and G. 'Jolly Bee' are great, you'll love this purple-flowered form (RHS 80A). The name must be another example of male color-blindness. Netherlands nurseryman Marco van Noort found this mutation in his plants of G. 'Jolly Bee' and subsequently named it G. 'Pink Penny'. Just like its parent, G. 'Pink Penny' makes an 15" tall x 18" wide mound of white-patterned green foliage that is topped from June until frost with 2.5" wide purple flowers, each highlighted with dramatic dark veining. This is a tremendously exciting new introduction for everyone, but especially for those of us in the geranium-impaired southeastern US. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07569

Geranium 'Rosetta' PPAF (Rosetta Hardy Cranesbill)
Sun Zone: 5-7 12" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
Here's another new Geranium wallichianum hybrid we got for trialing and are only releasing in limited quantities at this time. Geranium 'Rosetta' is touted as a pink version of the popular G. 'Jolly Bee'...although it sure looks lavender to me, albeit with a nice white eye zone. The growth form is a sprawling clump to 2' wide, similar to G. 'Jolly Bee'.

Geranium 'Rozanne' PP 12,175 (Rozanne's Cranesbill)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 5-8 15" tall Origin: Hybrid
This amazing new geranium has proven to be an outstanding performer...hence, it is one of the only patented hardy geraniums. G. 'Rozanne' was discovered in 1990 in the garden of Donald and Rozanne Waterer of Somerset, England, and released by Blooms of Bressingham. This sterile hybrid of G. himalayense x G. wallichianum 'Buxton's Variety' makes an 18" wide clump, topped from June until frost with large 2.5" blue-violet flowers. We think you should let Rozanne do her thing in your garden. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #05111

Geranium 'Sandrine' PPAF (Sandrine Hardy Cranesbill)
Sun Zone: 5-7, at least 18" tall Origin: Hybrid
Web-Only!
Geranium 'Sandrine' is the latest introduction from French breeder, Thierry Delabroye, (Heuchera 'Caramel'). G. 'Sandrine' is a seedling of G. 'Anne Folkard' (G. procurrens x G. psilostemon), which Theiry named after his wife. The 2" wide rich purple, black-throated flowers are much larger than those of G. 'Anne Folkard' and are set off nicely against the golden yellow foliage, which is brightest in spring. The scrambling nature of G. 'Sandrine' makes it perfect for creating fun color combinations in the perennial border.
Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #08044

Starting in late spring and continuing most of the summer, the compact 14" tall mound of dark-green cutleaf foliage is covered in flowers. We have found this to be a really great color break in Geranium sanguineum. For tough, dry, sunny areas, this is the perfect solution. Coen named the geranium for his street, "Ankummer Es." Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #04969

'Stephanie' which produces an 14" tall x 18" wide tight clump of textured, light green, rounded foliage, topped in spring with upturned mauvy blue (RHS 85A/B) flowers...a heavy spring bloomer. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml) #07693
