Hemerocallis 'Golden Zebra' PP 14,221 (J. Malan 94)
Sun to Part Sun Zone: 5-9, at least 12" tall Origin: Hybrid
(syn: H. 'Malja') Over the years, I've seen many variegated seedlings, but there is finally a stable variegated daylily. In 1989, South Africa's Jacques Malan grew seed that he had purchased as miniature hybrid daylilies. One of the seedlings was variegated, and the result is a dwarf daylily with dramatic foliage...green leaves with a wide, creamy white border. I really don't care if it ever flowers, but just the same, the 1' tall clump is adorned with single orange flowers in late spring, reminiscent of H. dumortieri. The plant was first introduced in 1994 in South Africa as H. 'Golden Zebra'. The name was improperly changed to the invalid name H. 'Malja' and then incorrectly accepted by the US Patent Office. (Please buy those folks a copy of The International Code of Nomenclature.) Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
