The late Luther Burbank hybridized a number of wonderful plants, and one of our favorites is the spineless prickly pear. For us, this fast-growing but compact opuntia makes a 6' wide mound (in 5 years) of 6" grey-green pads. In August, the clump is topped with large, bright yellow flowers, followed by large red "pears." Well-drained winter soils are vital for best performance. Pot size: 24 fl. oz (709.77 ml)
