More Information About Pronephrium

Pronephrium is a genus of 77 species of mostly tropical rainforest ferns that can be found from Southern China and Japan to India and Malaysia and south to Australia and New Zealand as well as on some Pacific islands like Fiji. A few species have adapted to more temperate climates and can be grown in warm gardens but Pronephrium is a very rare fern in American gardens.

As a garden specimen, Pronephrium has a coarse texture (like Coniogramme) with large pinnae distributed along the stipes (fern stalks). Pronephrium species grow from a slowly spreading rhizome so a single plant will colonize an area in time. As you might have guessed from its native distribution, Pronephrium prefers a typically ferny garden location...consistently moist soil and shade.

The name Pronephrium comes from the Greek 'pro' (before) and 'nephros' (kidney) which refers to the somewhat kidney-shaped spores. When you're ready to buy Pronephrium for your perennial garden, we hope you'll check out our online list of Pronephrium for sale.
