Reineckia carnea is a superb evergreen woodland groundcover in the Asparagus family, that's sadly still unknown by most gardeners...far less popular than its close cousins, liriope and ophiopogon. Reineckia 'Greenscape' is an old clone we acquired in the 1990s without a cultivar name, but to avoid confusion with many newly introduced clones, we added the cultivar name 'Greenscape'. Reineckia 'Greenscape' is composed of 16" long x 3/8" wide shiny green leaves that form a lovely tight growing groundcover mat, that for us tops out at 10" tall and spreads to 10' wide in 20 years. The plants are topped with short spikes of light lavender flowers, in late October and November, and followed by equally short spikes of light lavender fruit...alll buried in the foliage. Reineckia carnea is adaptable to a wide range of soil types and soil acidity as long as the soil isn't drought stricken for an extensive period. Medicinally, the root is used as a heart stimulating tonic as well as to improve memory.
