Native to shaded mountainous cliffs in Shikoku and Kyushu, Japan, this rare small woodland orchid emerges in spring with 2-3 small grass-like leaves from a small underground rhizome. In late spring, the tiny clumps are topped with small but showy flowers that can either be pink, purple, white, or a bicolor combination thereof. During the growing season, moist, well-drained soil is essential. Ponerorchis graminifolia is not a plant for beginning gardeners.
