This 2011 Plant Delights/ JLBG introduction is a splendid form of Ligularia japonica, from a 2005 seed collection by plantsman Hans Hansen in Sichuan, China. Ligularia japonica 'Chinese Dragon' has made an outstanding clump in our garden, composed of bold-textured, cutleaf leaves (less serrated than the Japanese form). The cold-resistant foliage emerges for us in mid-February, during hellebore season, oblivious to two more months of cold temperatures. Starting in mid-June (NC), the deciduous clumps are topped with 4' tall sturdy spikes of yellow-orange flowers that result in a midsummer butterfly orgy...binoculars not included. Moist, rich organic soils produce the largest plants.
