This unique native blazing star looks like a typical blazing star after colliding with a tractor-trailer! The 2'+ tall branched stalks are topped in late summer with the typical small purple flowers...each seemingly smashed into a large purple button. L. squarrosa is usually found in upland woodlands with an alkaline or near neutral ph soil. It also requires good drainage to persist in the garden, so site accordingly.
