Knautia macedonica is essentially a scabiosa on a stick. The pinnately compound leaves (cutleaf in botanical lingo) clasp the flowering stems as they expand upward from a winter basal rosette. Starting in early summer and continuing into fall, several 16" tall stalks on this compact selection are topped with 1" ruby-red scabiosa-like flowers...good for flower arrangers. Moist, well drained soils are best for this short-lived European meadow native.
