This superb, but underused himalayan iris, native to open woodlands, has proven quite adaptable here in the hot humid south. The unique crested iris (related to Iris tectorum) sports typical iris-like foliage that stands about 2' tall... topped in mid May (in NC) with branching scapes, each adorned with flowers featuring dark purple veined falls and light lavender standards (that's iris lingo). I. milesii prefers a moist rich acidic soil and a partially shaded site in the woodland garden.
