This is one of our favorite members of this wonderful genus of pea family plants. Although native to riverbanks in lowlands in Japan and China, we have this low-growing gem featured in our dry rock garden for great effect. The miniature foliage clothes the arching stems along with the miniature pink wisteria-like clusters of flowers, which adorn the plant from July through September. Our 12-year-old plants are only 4-6" tall and have spread to 24". It is very late to emerge in spring, so don't cast it off for dead.
