Hesperaloe funifera is a hard-to-find but easy-to-grow North American native false yucca species that hails from northern Mexico and just across the border into southern Texas. The thick, green, non-spiny, sword-like leaves, which are badly in need of a shave, can reach 6' tall and form an architectural 6' tall x 6' wide clump. In late spring and continuing through the summer, the durable, drought-tolerant clumps are topped with 8-12' tall open flower spikes holding very interesting creamy white flowers. Hesperaloe funifera is a slow-growing plant that will never make you go "wow," but a nice mass of these will tell all the world that they are in the garden of a serious plant nerd.
