The rarely-offered NC native Gentiana catesbaei grows to only 12" tall with short, sprawling stems covered with whorls of thumbnail sized, rubbery, dark green leaves. In October through November the stalks of this cute gentian are smothered in clusters of narrowly open, tubular blue flowers...attractive to hummingbirds. Gentiana catesbaei prefers moist conditions where competition is minimal...we have been thrilled at the ease of culture. Gentiana catesbaei is named after Mark Catesby, an English naturalist from the 1700s, who published the first flora and fauna of part of North America.
