Eryngium aquaticum var. ravenelii is one of those wonderful southeast natives that you wonder why everyone doesn't grow. Shared by plant prodigy Dr. Patrick McMillan, Eryngium aquaticum var. ravenelii forms a small basal rosette of 1' long linear leaves, which, starting for us in mid-August, is topped with 30" tall flowering stalks, each ending in branched antennae-like clusters of 6-10 blue fuzzy, thumb-sized ball flower heads. Eryngium aquaticum var. ravenelii is equally at home in its native wetland habit from North Carolina to northern Florida, as well as average moisture gardens.
