Epimedium pinnatum ssp. colchicum, from the mountainous region along the Black Sea, is regarded as the best choice for a spreading evergreen ground cover in colder regions. This exceedingly drought-tolerant species is topped in very early spring with spikes of bright yellow bells, backed by reddish spurs. The flowers are held nicely above the expanding new foliage. The deeply burrowing rhizomes make this species exceedingly hardy, and the thick foliage has proven amazingly resistant to leaf spot diseases.
