(aka: Epimedium 'Rigoletto', 'Emei Shan') Epimedium 'Akame' is Mikinori Ogisu's Epimedium x omeiense type specimen (the clone from which the species was named) from China's sacred Mt. Omei. The 2' wide clumps of large evergreen leaves are topped, starting in early April (NC), with spikes of raspberry-spurred flowers, each highlighted by a contrasting yellow cup. 'Akame' is a Japanese word that means red bud. As with all epimediums, moist but well-drained, rich woodland soils produce the best results.
