Thanks to our friends at Yucca Do, who suggested we try Dyckia choristaminea for winter hardiness. We were thrilled to find that it survived 8 degrees F with virtually no damage. This fascinating mini-bromeliad from the mountainous state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil makes a 6" tall x 15" wide clump of small rosettes, composed of narrow purple-tinted leaves, each lined with small non-aggressive baby spines. When the clumps of Dyckia choristaminea 'Frazzle Dazzle' mature, they are topped with 15" tall spikes of small, bright yellow flowers. Good drainage in winter is necessary.
