Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' is a selected form of autumn fern that has brighter red new growth than what is typically seen with spore-grown plants. Frankly, all autumn ferns have great color when the new fronds emerge from the evergreen clump, so this is really something special. Autumn fern is a very easy-to-grow, deer-resistant fern making a 2' wide clump that is tolerant of a wide range of garden conditions, including extreme drought once established.
Maintenance:
The only maintenance we recommend for Brilliance Autumn fern is to cut the old foliage to the ground in spring just prior to the emergence of the new leaves. Usually the evergreen foliage gets tattered overwinter, and the ornamental potential of the plant is diminished when the old foliage isn't removed. Do not remove the foliage any earlier, since it helps keep the ground cool and the new growth from sprouting too early. Dryopteris erythrosora typically only produces one growth flush per year, so never remove the foliage during the growing season, or there is a good chance your plant will die.
Growing Conditions:
Dryopteris erythrosora prefers rich, evenly moist soil, but also has reasonably good drought tolerance. Light shade is ideal, but autumn fern also can tolerate a couple of hours of early morning sun when the temperatures are cool.
Natural Impacts:
Autumn fern is quite deer resistant, so is a great choice in areas with high deer pressure. The only animal we've notice that is attracted to it is Homo sapiens, so you'll want to protect your plant from pesky neighbors with shovels.
