Imagine how strange it is to find an Asian fern "native" in LA. Such was the case in 1999, when I was botanizing in the Tunica Hills region of northern LA. Cyrtomium fortunei was growing happily among other ferns such as Adiantum pedatum, Polystichum acrostichoides, and Thelypteris kunthii. In form, these evergreen holly ferns were much taller and more open than those we were already growing. A few spores and a few years later, we can now share these with others.
